Welcome to Maid of Clay Ceramics...
Many potters will talk about discovering clay, falling in love with clay, or even go as far as to say they are addicted to clay. I am one of those who from the day I started working in ceramics I have never gone back to any of the creative pursuits I had followed in the past. Painting and jewelry have fallen by the wayside to make way for clay, though I have found ways to incorporate them into my current work.
Although the process of “throwing” clay is a technical one, it is magical as well. To see a vase emerge from a lump of clay using only your hands and a wheel is a wonderful feeling. My fingers tell the clay when my mind desires and the clay responds. The material constantly offers something new: a different shape, a new style - the potential of what can be is what keeps this art so enthralling, no matter how long one has been a potter.
I’ve been immersed in the art and craft of clay since 2000. College courses in ceramics and glaze calculation have enriched the technical aspects of my understanding of clay, but I believe that a passion for learning about what you love to do can be the best teacher.
Much of what I create is inspired by the periods and styles that I love: Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Austrian Amphora. Having collected these styles of pottery long before I even started doing ceramics, I began creating pottery that I personally would want if I were still collecting. Though the influences from the period styles can be seen, the style is purely my own.
My pots are primarily thrown on the wheel, sculpted, carved and decorated by hand. Each is unique, and made without molds. My studio is a one-woman operation, which means I perform each step in the process myself from the throwing of a piece on the wheel, to the glazing and firing of the kiln.
None of the items shown on this website are for sale, they are just to give an idea of what I have worked on in the last several years and my style of ceramics, both sculptural and thrown. If you are interested in purchasing a piece of mine, please check out my online store by clicking the "Etsy Store" link above left. Most of the items in my Etsy store are available for immediate purchase.
